Maryann Berté is co-founder and partner at symbologie.. With more than two decades of experience, she has directed a wide array of projects for prominent clients including Disney, Procter & Gamble, Warner Bros., and Viacom to name a few. She has consulted clients such as Nickelodeon and others on adapting their most valued entertainment assets for successful retail licensing programs. She and her teams have worked with companies to develop their brand and product lines from start-up to established success, and on occasion to that company’s purchase by a major global corporation. Maryann combines a passion for design with highest professional standards to inspire excellence. She brings insight, creative talent, and a capacity to integrate diverse points of view to the collaborative process at the heart of symbologie. projects.
Maryann established her first design studio in New York City in 1987 delivering fashion design, illustration and merchandising services to clients including Jones New York, Liz Claiborne, Mario Valentino and others. When Disney was added to the client roster, the studio began expanding into entertainment branding and other areas beyond fashion.
10 years after founding Berté Design Studio, Maryann was joined by partner Wolfgang Schwarz. Together the partners renamed the studio BigBang, and expanded their graphic design, interactive, and brand consulting services. The client list grew to include Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, Viacom and others. Consumer product clients such as P&G, and General Mills were also added.
After 15 years as BigBang, the partners announced a rebrand and expansion with the launch of symbologie.. This introduced an expanded network of talent and services making them a truly full spectrum brand consultancy structured to deliver the highest expertise with greatest flexibility.
Maryann began her career as associate designer for Jabé, where she collaborated with Marie Rucki of Studio Berçot Paris to design the Jabé sportswear lines. She then moved on to Francesca Sterlacci, NYC as head designer of women’s high fashion apparel. By the early 1990’s, in addition to running Berté Design Studio, Maryann also co-founded Chiang Berté, a women’s designer apparel label which garnered orders from Barney’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s and others.
Maryann graduated summa cum laude from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and won the fashion Industry Award for Excellence in Design. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of Florida. Maryann speaks fluent English and German. She is symbologie.’s resident fashion guru.
